What Are The Signs Of Glaucoma?

January 8, 2021 By Keren Wheeler

signs of glaucomaGlaucoma is a classification of eye conditions that causes damage to the optic nerve. This nerve is important in maintaining good vision. Glaucoma causes damage by placing an abnormal amount of pressure in the eye. This is why it is important to recognize the signs of glaucoma so you can get treatment before the condition progresses.

This eye condition is the leading cause of blindness in America. Although it can occur in individuals of all ages, doctors diagnose it more often in older adults. The most common type of glaucoma does not have any warning signs, and the condition can gradually affect a person’s eyes without them realizing their vision is changing. It is typically only in the advanced stage that the signs of glaucoma are apparent.

When a person loses their sight due to glaucoma, the damage cannot be reversed. This is why it is important to take preventative measures by having regular eye exams so the pressure in your eyes can be measured. If the condition is recognized early enough, the loss of vision can be prevented or slowed down. However, if you have glaucoma, you will need to receive glaucoma treatment for the rest of your life.

What Are The Signs Of Glaucoma?

It is important to remember that the signs and symptoms vary from person to person. They will also vary on the type of condition you have as well as the stage of glaucoma. Some of the signs include:

  • Tunnel vision (advanced stages)
  • Patchy areas of blind spots
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Eye pain
  • Blurry vision

If it is not treated, glaucoma will lead to blindness. Even when a doctor treats the condition, around 10 percent of people who have glaucoma will go blind in at least one of their eyes within 15 to 20 years.

Prevention

Although you may not be able to stop glaucoma from developing, self-care can help you detect the condition so vision loss can be prevented or limited. You can aid in prevention by:

  • Getting your eyes examined regularly
  • Know if glaucoma runs in your family
  • Exercise
  • Protect your eyes

When you begin to notice the signs of glaucoma, you should make an appointment immediately with your eye doctor. Join a support group so you can interact with other people who have glaucoma.
