Caring For Elderly At Home When There Is Resistance

August 2, 2018 By Keren Wheeler

caring for elderly at homeIt can be difficult caring for the elderly at home if he or she is resistant to receiving assistance. Family members should try to understand the reason for the resistance and the ways they can encourage their elderly family members to be more cooperative.

One of the most common challenges family members face when an elderly loved one is no longer able to care for him or herself is to decide how the senior should receive care, and who should deliver the care. However, what is the best way to help your loved one when he or she does not want assistance? Fortunately, there are strategies you can implement when you are choosing services for caring for elderly at home.

The Reasons Why Some Seniors Are Resistant To Care

The need for in home care for seniors usually results from a loss. The loss may be physical or mental in nature and may also accompany a decline in independence. By accepting care, the senior may feel as if he or she is giving up their independence, privacy or dignity. He or she may also feel they will have to adjust to a new schedule that is determined by someone else. All of these changes can make your loved one feel scared, vulnerable and uncomfortable. Feelings of guilt and anger are not uncommon.

How to Approach Your Loved One

If you think that your loved one will not be receptive to receiving care in the home, you may procrastinate when it comes to discussing the topic with them. However, you will need to decide how to start talking about home care and begin the communication process.

One of the first things you can do is decide the type of help your loved one needs. This will help you determine which senior services will be the most beneficial.

You will then need to choose a time when you and your elderly loved one will be comfortable, relaxed and available to talk. The conversation should take place in a non stressful and familiar environment. During this conversation, allow your loved one to speak their mind, and listen to what they have to say. Also ask them about their preferences for services.

Get the help of other family members to help you persuade your elderly loved one. The senior may be more inclined to accept assistance if he or she sees that other family members are supportive.

Caring for elderly at home services is an excellent way for your aging family member to get the assistance he or she needs while staying at home. Once your loved one understands how in-home care can promote their independence, they may be more receptive to the care.
